Search Tips

The search engine searches the full text of books. All search results are relevancy ranked not only by the number of occurrences of the search term, but also by their location. Results found in chapter titles and section headings are given greater weight than occurrences in the body of the text. Not only are books listed in relevant order, but sections within each book are also relevancy ranked, presenting the top four for single-click access right to the content.

You may specify words or phrases alone or grouped in boolean combinations (phrases are words enclosed in quotation marks). The search engine is not case sensitive. The following are examples of valid search expressions:

java JAR files
A word proximity search. Content with the words closest together are ranked higher.
"java JAR files"
An exact phrase search. Content must match the phrase exactly to be part of the search results.
java and (JAR or files)
A boolean expression. Boolean operators are AND, OR, NOT.
"JAR files" near beans
A proximity expression. Content containing the exact phrase with word nearby are ranked higher.
database perf*
A word truncation expression. The * is a wildcard character.

Restricting the search to specific sets of titles can further enhance results. A search can be limited to:

Any of the predefined subtopics
Select a topic, then a subtopic and then choose 'Search for Books' from the Main Menu. Enter search term(s) and before clicking 'search', change the search domain in the pull down to 'Last Book List' to search only books in that subtopic.
A list of books from a previous search
After completing a search, choose 'Search for Books' from the Main Menu. Enter a new search term(s) and before clicking 'search' again, change the search domain in the pull down to 'Last Book List' to search only books in the previous results list'.
A specific book
On the table of contents page of a book, choose 'Search for Books' from the Main Menu. Enter your search term(s) and before clicking 'search' change the search domain in the pull down to 'Last Book' to search only this book.
